Estos son los verbos modales o auxiliares modales
Características
I can cook. = Sé cocinar. I can't cook today. = No puedo cocinar hoy. Can I go to the toilet?
Por ejemplo, se necesitan estas expresiones para formar el futuro o el condicional (WILL/WOULD+INFINITIVO), el pasado simple (DIDN'T+INFINITIVO), etc
Exs.: We will be able to do it.
We didn't manage to finish the project.
In our school, we are not allowed to use our mobile.
También se usan esas las locuciones y verbos equivalentes para usar los tiempos que no tienen. Ex.: I had to do the exercise. = Tenía que hacer ejercicio.
Estos son los verbos modales o auxiliares modales
- can-could (puedo,-es,-emos...) (podía, podría)
- must- (have to) (deber, tener que)
- may-might (puedo,-es..., -permiso o posibilidad-)
- will-would (will+infintive: forma futuro simple) (would+inf. forma el condicional simple)
- shall-should / ought to -formal- (shall: ofrecimientos, sugerencias) should/ought to, para dar consejos...)
- need to / needn't (no tener por qué, no tener necesidad de)
- had better - like should or ought to-
- would rather -like prefer to-
Características
- NO FORMAN TIEMPO verbal, sólo acompañan o auxilian ("ayudan"); al infinitivo de un verbo para expresar un MODO de hacer una actividad: con permiso, capacidad, habilidad, consejo, etc .
- Van seguidos de INFINITIVO sin "TO" , excepto need to (necesitar), ought to (consejo formal).
- CARECEN de la mayoría de tiempos verbales : unos sólo tienen una forma de presente simple como "must", otros sólo tienen presente simple, y pasado o condicional (can-could, may-might...), ...
- La 3ª persona singular del presente simple NO lleva -S o -ES (He can. She must. etc.
- Un mismo verbo puede tener VARIOS USOS:
I can cook. = Sé cocinar. I can't cook today. = No puedo cocinar hoy. Can I go to the toilet?
- CARECEN de INFINITIVO (No existen to can, to must, etc.).
- must - have to (obligación)
- can - be able to (ser capaz de) / manage to (arreglárselas para), be allowed to (ser permitido)
- may - be able to (posibilidad), be allowed to (permiso)

1) S+ used to + infinitive = solía ... o a pretérito imperfecto español
Siempre se refiere a HÁBITOS en el PASADO.
Ex.: Ten years ago, people used to write letters. = Hace 10 años, la gente solía escribir / escribía cartas.
FORM (Se niega y pregunta como los verbos flexivos en pasado simple)
+ I used to cry as a baby.
- I didn't use to cry as a baby.
? Did you use to cry as a baby? No, I didn't. // Yes, I did.
2) S+ be used to + v-ing = estar acostumbrado a...
(Hay que conjugar "be"; "used" es invariable:
Ej.: I am/am not/was/wasn't used to study 2 hours every day.
3) S+get used to + v-ing = acostumbrarse a...
(Hay que conjugar "get"; "used" es invariable:
Ej.: I get/don't/got/didn't used to study 2 hours every day.

Estos usos son equivalentes a otros verbos
- USED TO + INFINITIVE I used to play squash - I don’t play anymore
- BE USED TO + OBJECT OR VERB+ING I’m used to playing rugby in the cold - I am accustomed to it
- GET USED TO + OBJECT OR VERB+ING I got used to playing rugby in the heat - I adapted to the heat
