ADJECTIVES
What is an adjective?
El adjetivo es la parte de la oración que califica (describe) a un sustantivo (o nombre). (Responde a la pregunta ¿cómo soy/es/son...? Mis ojos son grandes, marrones, mis hermanos son mayores, mi perro juguetón, niño alto te mira..., etc.)
- Examples: I am tall. I have big brown eyes. My siblings are older than me. I have got a *frisky dog (*frisky). I have downloaded the funniest game ever. .
RULES OF USAGE
1. NO PLURAL: No tienen plural, en ningún grado, ni en positivo (tall girls), ni en comparativo (taller children), ni en superlativo (tallest girls):
NO: We are tallers than you.
YES: We are taller than you.
NO: These are the most interestings books I have read.
YES: These are the most interesting books I have read.
Excepción: sports car/sports cars, sports shoe/sports shoes.
2. ORDER (See your texbook Unit 2, Writing: Order of adjectives, page 27.)
Orden 1: Se colocan DESPUÉS de un verbo atributivo (be, seem, look...)
Cuando varios adjetivos califican a un nombre (sustantivo), se colocan todos antes de él, y en un orden determinado, no al azar. El más alejado es el más subjetivo (opinión), mientras que el que forma parte esencial del nombre (material, etc.) va justo antes de él. No suelen ponerse más de tres adjectivos.
