Thanksgiving Day in United States
Thanksgiving Day in the United States is a federal holiday (national holiday) celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. It precedes Black Friday. What do people do on these day? Thanksgiving Day is traditionally a day for families and friends to get together for a special dinner. The meal often includes a turkey, stuffing, potatoes, cranberry sauce, gravy, pumpkin pie, and vegetables. Thanksgiving Day is a time for many people to give thanks for what they have. Thanksgiving Day parades are held in some cities and towns on or around Thanksgiving Day. Some parades or festivities also mark the opening of the Christmas shopping season. Some people have a four-day weekend so it is a popular time for trips and to visit family and friends. Although Thanksgiving celebrations date back to the first European settlements in North America, it was not until the 1860s that Abraham Lincoln declared the last Thursday of November to be a national holiday. The roads and skies are going to be especially crowded this year, as the number of people traveling for Thanksgiving is expected to hit its highest level in 12 years.
AAA says there will be some 50.9 million people traveling 50 miles or more for Thanksgiving 2017, a 3.3% jump from last year. Some 45.5 million of those will be in their cars. That’s going to make for some congested roads.
