WHAT IS A RELATIVE PRONOUN?
1. A philologist is a person who/that specializes in the study of modern or ancient written texts.
2. Grumpy is an adjective which/that refers to a bad-tempered person or a person in a bad mood.
3. June 12th is the day when we will take the exam.
4. Iñarritu is the director whose film "The Revenant" (El renacido) won the best film Oscar this year.
5. Murcia is the University where I want to study.
6 What she told you isn't true.
7. I don't know why she didn't come.
8. I don't know how you did it.
9. Career, which refers to a person’s lifework, is a false friend.
10. The girl, whom we saw yesterday on main street, is my brother's fiancé.
TYPES of RELATIVE SENTENCES
Defining (= restrictive)
Estas oraciones:
(that = lo que dijo, he = sujeto de likes)
* The day (when) we met was Sunday. =
The day we met was Sunday.
BUT: The man who came in is my dad.
Non-defining (= non-restrictive):
THINK ABOUT
2.--What's the difference in meaning. How many sisters have each, Mary and John got?
1. Mary: "My sister who lives in London is coming next week."
2. John: "My sister, who lives in London, is coming next week."

- Sus relativos who, which and when se pueden sustituir por THAT en lenguaje informal.
* The day (when) we met was Sunday. =
The day we met was Sunday.
BUT: The man who came in is my dad.
- El relativo (who, which, etc.)

(look at, listen to, be interested in, etc.):
Preposition + WHICH (things, animals, ideas)
Preposition + WHOM (people)

Activity Translate this quote by a famous mountaineer. Then, rewrite it omiting the relative. “Annapurna, to which we had gone emptyhanded, was a treasure on which we should live the rest of our days. With this realization we turn the page: a new life begins. There are other Annapurnas in the lives of men.” ― Maurice Herzog, Annapurna |
